Lost Without and Chestnut - Poetry Schmoetry #2

I think I'm getting into the spirit of Poetry Schmoetry week. I already want to share more! The poem from my last post is the most recent one I've written. I know it's been a while, I should really try to write something new.

Most of my poems are from that time between high-school and when I got married. So many broken relationships to whine about. Today I'm going to share two songs that I wrote back then. They are totally unrelated and about two very different relationships.

Lost Without

The phone doesn’t ring anymore
when it’s two in the morning
As I’m lying in bed;
A habit I’ve been learning

To do without. I’m not lost without
Your voice.

I don’t watch your picture anymore
As it transforms into smiles
Like you shared with me,
Just for a little while.

But you forgot, went out and got
Back to where you were.
You forgot, went out and got
Her.

Were you waiting for me to let you in?
I guess you couldn’t leave till I’d trust you again.

I can do without. I’m not lost without
Your smile.
I can do without. I’m not lost without
You!

When your eyes would shine
You told me when I asked you
That I was on your mind
Why did I believe you?

Were you waiting for me to let you in?
I guess you couldn’t leave till I’d trust you again.

I can do without. I’m not lost without
The way no one laughs but you.
I can do without. I’m not lost without
All the stupid things you do.
I can do without. I’m not lost without
You!

Chestnut

Why didn’t I notice the
chestnut warmth in your eyes?
You smile and my heart expands,
for a pulse.

All this time I chose to search
for substance in the skies,
left to see if maybe I’d discover
someone else.

Sitting here across from you,
my hand in yours, a way to be
living without emptiness,
I hear you speak my name.

I didn’t know the person
that I had to find was me;
I’m ready now
and life for us will never be the same.

You don’t seem to mind the times
I stroke the scar beneath your lip
again, the smoothest part amid
the stubble on your face.

Our foreheads touch
and I smile when two eyes become three;
You hold me there ‘til I’m content
to leave your soft embrace.

Sitting here across from you,
my hand in yours, a way to be
living without emptiness,
I hear you speak my name.

I didn’t know the person
that I had to find was me;
I’m ready now
and life for us will never be the same.

Sing - Poetry Schmoetry

Poetry Schmoetry Blogfest

I love Blogfests! It is from Writing with Shelly and it's not too late to sign up. Here are the details for what you have to do.

2. Sign up by filling out the Linky here
3. Write a Poem
(ANY kind of poem or you could even blog about 'why I hate poetry.' I'm cool with that.)
4. Post your poem the week of July 11th-14th (midnight PST)
(You can even post a poem for every day that week if you feel like it)

This poem is from a few years ago (I hope that's not breaking the rules). I started it shortly after being married and then went back and finished it after having children. The mood of it changed a lot over that time.

Sing

Where is the music?
Where is the dream;
The passion, or surge
Of electricity?
Like there used to be.

Did I lose some vital organ
That was keeping me alive?
Or been overrun by laziness,
Stubbornness, and pride.

Where is the music
That once was in my head?
Another world and person-
A mind that could be fed
On fantasy. The menagerie
of hope, anticipation.

My guitar is old and out of tune,
My voice is strained and dry.
When asked to sing the melody
I tremble with the shy.

Where is the music;
The breath,
the life?

We enter this together;
A new world, a new person-
And I sing my lullaby.

What do you think? I'm always open to critiques (and praise of course). I'd love to see your poetry too if you want to share or give a link. (or join the blogfest!)

Location Location Location - Road Trip Wednesday

It's time for another Road Trip Wednesday! This week they asked us to Share some images that inspire your WIP.

I'm all about using pictures to help me fully imagine the story.
Most of the ones I'll share today have to do with the setting. Even when I started this as a play I always imagined the characters being surrounded by mountains - so get ready to see some mountain scenery.

The story begins in the mountains of BC (I won't specify where). The above and below pictures are similar to the place where some of the characters live.

I've already shared this picture but it can't hurt to share again. This reminds me of one of my favourite scenes early on in the book.

The next two pictures show Vee's homeland, and the setting for some of the scenes.

And for fun - here are a few things yet to come

YA vs Everything Else: Help!

When I started writing my WIP I assumed it was going to be young adult. I had even gotten about 10,000 words into it before I realized it was not. I suppose it wouldn't have been a big deal to change my characters into teenagers and try to go that route but it just wasn't them. That's when I began the quest for other books to read in my new genre: contemporary fantasy (non-YA).

Wow, this search proved to be a lot harder than I anticipated. I mostly only find out about YA books and the adult books I hear about are all high fantasy, set in some time period or other world with knights and elves and what-not.

I have another problem with some adult books - they can be boring. The books that I managed to find (by just buying them at the store without ever hearing about them first) took forever to get into. I slogged through the first third of the books just getting through the info dumping and back-story.

Please help. I would love reading suggestions.
